お二人に選んだ、水尾の柚子。Mizuo yuzu, chosen for two guests in winter Arashiyama.

冬の嵐山をご案内した、30〜40代ほどのお二人。会話やお二人の雰囲気から、二人で過ごす時間を大切にされている方だと感じました。The guests were two travellers in their thirties or forties visiting Arashiyama in winter. From their conversation and manner, the driver sensed that they valued the time they spent together.

嵐山の山側には、私が普段から立ち寄る野菜の自動販売機があります。冬になると、そこに並ぶのが水尾の柚子です。生産量が少なく、一般にはあまり出回りませんが、皮の香りが強いことで知られています。In the hills beyond Arashiyama is a vegetable vending machine the driver visits regularly. During winter it is stocked with yuzu from Mizuo, a local variety produced in small quantities and known for the fragrance of its peel.

以前、水尾の柚子畑を訪ねた際に教わったのは、山が深く日照時間が短いことが、柚子の皮にとっては良い環境になるということでした。果肉よりも皮が大切な柚子は、強い日差しを受けすぎないことで、香り高く育つそうです。During an earlier visit to a Mizuo yuzu orchard, the driver learned that the deep valley and short hours of sunlight create favourable conditions for the peel. Because the peel matters more than the fruit itself, protection from intense sunlight helps the yuzu retain its distinctive fragrance.

その日、お二人を自動販売機へご案内すると、野菜や柚子が自動販売機で売られている光景を興味深そうに眺めていました。そこで水尾の柚子を六つほど購入し、日本では冬になると、柚子を湯に浮かべて香りを楽しむ習慣があることをご説明しました。「今日はこれで、お二人の時間を楽しんでください」。そう言って、柚子をお渡ししました。When the two guests were shown the vending machine, they were intrigued to see vegetables and yuzu sold in this way. The driver bought around six yuzu and explained the Japanese winter custom of floating them in a bath to enjoy their fragrance. “Please enjoy some time together with these tonight,” he said as he handed them over.

高価な贈り物ではありません。しかし、土地を知り、目の前のお客様を見たうえで選ぶからこそ、その方の記憶に残るものになります。どなたにも同じ提案をするのではなく、その方の雰囲気や過ごし方に合うものを、ちょうどよい形でお渡しする。私が大切にしている、小さな心配りの一例です。It was not an expensive gift. Its value came from knowing the place, observing the guests, and choosing something suited to them. Rather than making the same suggestion to everyone, the driver offered a small local experience in a form that felt right for these particular guests.

業務を終えた海外からのお客様を、
早朝の渓谷へ。An international guest's unexpected free morning in a quiet valley.

連日予定の詰まっていたお客様は、中東地域から来日された、政府要人の滞在準備を担う関係者でした。宿泊施設の確認や関係先との調整が続くなか、業務が予定より一日早く終了し、帰国までに半日の余白が生まれました。The guest, visiting from the Middle East, was responsible for preparing the stay of a senior government dignitary. After days spent inspecting accommodation and coordinating with local parties, the assignment finished one day ahead of schedule, leaving a free half-day before departure.

「少しだけ日本を見てみたい」というご希望でしたが、一般的な寺社巡りが、その方にとって最良の選択とは限りません。砂漠気候の地域で暮らす方にとって、豊かな緑と流れる水は、私たちが砂漠の景色に惹かれるのと同じように非日常です。そこで、混雑のない早朝の渓谷をご案内しました。The guest wished to see a little of Japan, but a conventional temple tour was not necessarily the most meaningful choice. For someone living in a desert climate, abundant greenery and flowing water can feel as extraordinary as a desert feels to us. The driver therefore chose a quiet valley in the early morning.

スーツ姿のまま滝まで歩き、写真を頼まれてシャッターを切った瞬間、光の輪が現れました。その光景を目にしたお客様は「アッラーだ」と声を上げ、深く感動されていました。限られた時間であっても、その方の仕事や文化的な背景まで理解して行き先を選ぶことで、ありきたりな観光ではない、心に残る時間へ変えることができます。Still dressed for business, the guest walked to the waterfall and asked for a photograph. At the moment the shutter was released, a halo of light appeared. Seeing it, the guest exclaimed, “Allah,” and stood deeply moved. Even a brief interval can become memorable when the destination is chosen with an understanding of the guest's work and cultural background.

三週間を過ごす部屋に、
金魚のいる風景を。Goldfish brought warmth to a three-week hotel stay.

海外からお越しになったご家族は、同じホテルで三週間を過ごす必要がありました。ただ宿泊するだけなら十分な部屋でも、長く暮らすには少し殺風景に感じられました。A family visiting from overseas needed to spend three weeks in the same hotel. The room was perfectly adequate for a short stay, but felt a little bare as a place to live for that length of time.

そこで、滞在する空間にも楽しみが生まれるよう、ひまわり畑へ出かけて花を選び、別の日には金魚すくいへ。気に入った金魚を迎え、ホテルの部屋で眺めながら過ごせるようにしました。To bring some life and enjoyment into the room, the family visited a sunflower field and chose flowers to display. On another day, they went goldfish scooping and brought home their favourite fish to enjoy during the stay.

三週間という時間を、観光地へ出かけるときだけでなく、ホテルへ戻ってからも心地よく過ごしていただく。移動の予定には書かれていないことまで考えることも、私にとって大切なサービスの一つです。The aim was to make all three weeks comfortable—not only the hours spent sightseeing, but also the time after returning to the hotel. Thinking beyond what appears on the itinerary is an important part of the service.
